Mental Capacity & Dementia
Introduction
A 1 hour CPD course in which delegates will gain an understanding of the principles of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 framework and how to support dementia patients within the dental environment. By the end of the course delegates will be able to :
- Understand why the Mental Capacity Act was introduced.
- Know the 5 principles of the Mental Capacity Act.
- Be familiar with the regulators requirements.
- Be familiar with different types of dementia.
- Be familiar with how we can support a patient with dementia how to manage decision making about their treatment.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course delegates will be able to :-
- Know the principles of the Mental Capacity Act.
- Understand the term ‘Best Interests’ and its relevance.
- Be familiar with the decisions needed to enable a person give consent to treatment.
- Know what needs to be recorded if a patient is thought to lack capacity.
- Know what support is required for a dementia patient during the dental visit.
A – Effective communication with patients, the dental team and others across dentistry, including when obtaining consent, dealing with complaints, and raising concerns when patients are at risk.
B – Effective management of self and effective management of others or effective work with others in the dental team, in the interests of patients; providing constructive leadership where appropriate.
C – Maintenance of skills, behaviours, and attitudes which maintain patient confidence.
